The Shirt of It
There is a section you will find in every wardrobe in the world. It's cross cultural, unisex and shared between the fashion conscious and those who just put on whatever is clean. It is, of course, the t-shirt collection. But call it a through back to the time when I was embarrassed that my boobs grew two cup sizes in two months and anything tight and slightly high neck made me feel like I was wearing a neon sign I just have never really been a fan of the tee.
Instead my t-shirt collection is replaced by a collection of t-shirts without the t. From plain white and cream to heavily pattered my shirt collection numbers over twenty and I find it hard to say no to boyfriend styles or pretty Peter Pan collared blouses alike. It also doesn't help that there is a shirt for every occasion which is more than I can say for it's more casual and simplified cousin. Important change of life job interview? There's your simple crisp shirt or even a silk one in a rich deep shade. Something to wear with that super full skirt that you brought after watching too many episodes of Mad Men? There's either your short sleeved cream blouse with a faintly patterned Peter Pan collar for the times when looking like Betty Draper is the only option or your cropped crisp shirt with mesh panel details when you don't want to like grandmother that much. A good match up with those cropped leather pants that you want to live in? Basically any shirt in your wardrobe depending on your mood.
There is also the fact that basically anyone who is every been classed as a style icon or sexy has had a moment in a button up. Audrey Hepburn made many appearances in the wardrobe staple but the one that has stuck with me since childhood and probably the most famous comes from Roman Holiday when she travels around the Italian capital on a Gregory Peck driven Vespa wearing a belted long skirt, ballet flats with calf wraps and the piece de resistance a short sleeved men's style shirt. piece de resistance
Fashion rebel of her time and original hero of the classic trouser suit for women, Katharine Hepburn, never really made a public appearance without a blouse or shirt of some type paired with the most famous of her attire (wide-legged, high waisted pants), a great fitted blazers, loafers and very simple and barely there make up.
Then there is Lauren Hutton the pure definition of American style who has made shirts the basis of pretty much all of her looks since the 70's.
The list goes on and on for the pros of this wardrobe stable but instead of turning this blogpost into an essay I just will leave you with my picks for the best shirts that are only a click and credit card guilt feeling away.
