Vintage Bunnies

Playboy is one of those things that I find women either hate or (secretly) love and although I sometimes hate to admit it in certain company I fall into the latter group. To me Playboy is more than just a mens magazine with boobs; it's a printed form of how society has and hasn't changed over the last 60 years and one of the best examples of how the printed form can influence culture.

In its glory years Playboy seemed very obvious from the outside: some nude pictures, articles on the best cocktails and some tips on how to get the girl but underneath was ideas and personalities that were fighting the status quo. Championing sex outside marriage, challenging traditional gender roles, support of women's rights to reproductive freedom, articles focusing on politics and economics and pieces by writers like Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Margaret Atwood and Vladimir Nabokov Playboy had all the ingredients to make not only an entertaining men's magazine but one that was intelligent and cultural significant that demonstrated the changing values and beliefs of society.

Beyond that and on the much more superficial side of things it is also probably one the best examples of societies ever changing view of beauty and what is sexual attractive. From flat chested to super-sized fake breasts, natural sun kissed hair to bleach blond and loaded with hairspray, full bush to the brazilian each issue shows just how drastically the ideal female form has changed and represents just how little society has changed when it comes to expectations that women have in terms of "looking after themselves".

On a more personal level I sometimes love to search the internet for old covers and photo shots for inspiration so along with this piece I have included my favourite vintage Playboy covers. Enjoy and remember you can't read a book by its cover or reputation.
